The Santa we see today everywhere in the holiday season is a fairly modern version of St. Nick. His image has been modified over the past few hundred years. In the mid 1800's he was sometimes seen as a salty seaman or vagavaughn. This watercolor painting tries to capture the Santa of the 1800's when he wasn't so round and jolly.
George Harth lives in Medina, OH, and spends the winters painting in Bonita Springs, FL. He began painting watercolors during high school in Leavenworth, Kansas. George started developing his love of art, at the age of thirteen, while taking private drawing lessons. He grew into watercolor painting and experienced early success. At the age of fifteen, George placed first in the Leavenworth Annual Art Exhibit of 1960. George has been called a Renaissance Man by many of his acquaintances because of his many interests and talents which include writing, photography, painting, and an occasional invention.
