If you visit Florida in the spring, you might be lucky enough to see some of the Florida waterfowl in their mating plumage. While I was in Corkscrew Swamp in the spring, I saw this Great Egret replete with its showy mating feathers. The feathers appear to not have any function except to show off the bird and catch the attention of some lucky female egret. When the season is over, and everyone has had their fun, the mating feathers are lost, and the Great Egret looks like a plain white bird, like most egrets you have seen in Florida.
George Harth lives in Medina, OH, and spends the winters painting in Bonita Springs, FL. He began painting watercolors during high school in Leavenworth, Kansas. George started developing his love of art, at the age of thirteen, while taking private drawing lessons. He grew into watercolor painting and experienced early success.
